Variations on a Barcarole op. 24 for 2 violins, viola and violoncello

The variation is entirely in the spirit of early Romanticism. The basic tone of the composition is humorous, which is particularly due to the way in which the instruments alternate very effectively in the melody.

Description

The Variations op. 24, Johann Benjamin Gross dedicated to his friends and colleagues Hubert Ries (Royal Prussian Concertmaster), “Messrs. Maurer, Böhmer and Just” (see title page of the first edition Berlin 1837). The first performance probably took place in 1833 by the Liphardt Quartet in Dorpat, of which he himself belonged between 1833 and 1835. (Folckert Lüken-Isberner: Johann Benjamin Gross, Kassel 2023)
