Description

Commissioned by the Essen Philharmonic for the NRW plucked instrument youth orchestra, ‘The Wastes of Time’ was composed in the spring of 2019.
The title is a fragment from William Shakespeare’s 12th sonnet, the subject of which is the relentless passage of time and the transitory nature of all earthly things. With old English lute songs in mind, the only option I could imagine was a clear, light tenor voice, free of any heroic bluster and pathos, combined with the delicate, silvery sound of a plucked instrument orchestra.

Level of difficulty: medium to high
