Anton Filtz

Anton Filtz (Fils) was baptized in Eichstätt on September 22, 1733 and buried in Mannheim on March 14,
1760. Already at the young age of 14 he became a student of Johann Stamitz and entered the court chapel
in Mannheim as a cellist. Just two years later, he is mentioned in a document as the second cellist alongside Innozenz Danzi (1730-1798). Despite his early death, he left a rich oeuvre. The musicologists are devided. On the one hand he is called an early deceased, but also an early accomplished composer, on the other hand he is described as ingenious but not fully mature.
His works were extremely popular. They are original in their thematic invention and surprise with striking
contrasts and strong expression.
